Charla Magistral de Sebastián Edwards en UDLA habla de los desafíos de la educación superior después de la pandemia
Sebastián Edwards, economista y Ph.D. de la Universidad de Chicago, habló de la necesidad de cambiar de las universidades para no sucumbir ante los requisitos del mundo de hoy y mañana.
• El webinar se inició con un discurso de bienvenida realizado por Pilar Romaguera, Rectora de la Universidad de Las Américas, quien hizo hincapié en el rol protagónico que hoy juegan la virtualización y tecnologías de la información dentro del escenario educativo, y la necesidad de ser solidarios para salir adelante en esta pandemia.
Sebastián Edwards, destacado economista y profesor titular de la cátedra Henry Ford II de la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles, (UCLA), analizó los variados cambios de estructura y métodos de enseñanza que hoy coexisten en la educación superior, aspectos que han mutado hacia un formato virtual como consecuencia de la pandemia por Covid-19 y que, sin lugar a dudas, seguirán marcando el rumbo de la educación, más allá del término de la crisis sanitaria.
“Esta nueva realidad debe jugar a nuestro favor y en pro de construir una mejor educación, en donde observamos, analizamos y utilizamos las tecnologías de la información de forma creativa y participativa. En este panorama los profesores asumen el rol de moderadores y facilitadores de los espacios tecnológicos para sus alumnos, y así mismo, los estudiantes se abren a un horizonte educativo completamente transformador al tener la oportunidad de conversar y debatir con expertos de todo el mundo y en cualquier horario, a través de las diversas plataformas y soluciones virtuales. Es así como le otorgamos un sentido completamente renovado a la educación, apelando a que sea más amplia, innovadora y pionera en la generación de grandes y trascendentales conversaciones”.
Asimismo, el profesional y Ph.D. de la Universidad de Chicago, señaló que “hoy es fundamental que esta nueva educación superior y quienes la integran, tengan la capacidad de poder desarrollar conversaciones profundas, aprender a escuchar, lo cual no es nada fácil, elaborar argumentos de forma lógica y presentarlos de manera persuasiva, y, siendo lo más importante, saber hacer las preguntas correctas, ya que las preguntas son el verdadero motor de nuestra mente”. Agregó que “la universidad debe ser concebida como un lugar para el nacimiento de conversaciones fructíferas y constructivas, donde verdaderamente se generen ideas sólidas y que sean un aporte para la sociedad”.
Acorde a lo anterior, Pilar Romaguera, Rectora de Universidad de Las Américas, inició la jornada a través de un discurso de reflexión donde señaló que “la pandemia ha sido un enorme reto para la educación superior, reto que ha implicado el abocarnos a seguir planteando ideas y darle continuidad a nuestra línea de enseñanza, a través de la implementación de nuevas metodologías virtuales. Por lo mismo, como universidad hemos potenciado el nivel de apoyo que entrega nuestro eCampus, logrando concretar un soporte virtual al 98% de las asignaturas que impartimos como casa de estudios”.
La autoridad académica de UDLA también añadió que “más allá de lo compleja que pueda ser la logística propia de adaptar las labores educativas a plataformas digitales, el gran desafío que hoy enfrentamos como universidad y también como sociedad, es que esta virtualización no sea desigual. Por lo mismo, es importante replantearnos la educación desde un enfoque solidario, donde todos sus actores, independiente si se han visto afectados o no por la crisis económica que ha generado la pandemia, tengan acceso a los procesos educativos”.
Al término de la clase magistral, se realizó una ronda de preguntas, instancia donde Sebastián Edwards pudo discutir sobre uno de los temas claves que podrían cambiar o dar un giro hacia esta nueva educación. “La educación del mañana debe sustentarse en un enfoque justo y solidario, libre de brechas y segregaciones. Como sociedad debemos avanzar y alcanzar un sistema educativo que aporte equidad en la calidad y acceso al aprendizaje.
Hay que cambiar nuestra mentalidad, en California los alumnos tienen la posibilidad de adquirir diversos conocimientos de forma simultánea través de lo que denominamos programas híbridos, ya sea pasando por una clase sobre Shakespeare, hasta una de economía. Asimismo, las carreras universitarias deberían ser más cortas, formando profesionales que sean generalistas, y puedan ser un real aporte para la sociedad”.
Finalmente, y como punto de cierre del seminario online, Pilar Romaguera, Rectora de la Universidad de Las Américas le consultó al economista Sebastián Edwards ¿cuál es el rol que deben cumplir los economistas frente al escenario actual y futuro, considerando la panorámica de incertidumbre que ha originado la pandemia? Ante esta interrogante el experto comentó que “como sociedad nos veremos enfrentados a diversos cambios y, por ende, a distintas opciones que tomar para enfrentar dichos cambios. Dado lo anterior, el rol de los economistas será el de señalar que todas estas opciones tienen diversas consecuencias y estas últimas las tendremos que explicar desde la humildad, siempre buscando generar respuestas que contribuyan a la conversación nacional”.
