Reconocimiento del iris, la función biométrica que será tendencia en el futuro

Una nueva forma de identificación y control, que posee impactos de manera inmediata, impulsada por la contingencia, puede ser útil para prevenir fraudes y accidentes laborales, gracias al trabajo y participación del Centro I+D de TOC Biometrics.
 
¿Cómo saber si un colaborador está apto a nivel físico para realizar su jornada laboral? ¿Cómo detectar si un conductor de bus, transporte público o maquinaria pesada está preparado para hacer uso de estos vehículos, garantizando una calidad de servicio que evite posibles accidentes?.
 
Estas son algunas de las inquietudes que surgen cada cierto tiempo en el ámbito público como privado, sobre todo cuando se busca minimizar riesgos que pueden poner en peligro a terceros.
Una solución efectiva e inmediata es la identificación y verificación de la identidad de las personas, a través del reconocimiento del iris, elemento invulnerable perteneciente al ojo. 
 
Este sistema ha visto acelerado su desarrollo desde su creación en 1990 por la pandemia provocada por el Covid-19, debido a que mantener el distanciamiento físico y social hoy es una norma básica entre seres humanos a nivel global. Actualmente, las posibilidades de tocar algo que ya tuvo contacto con otro individuo, podría exponernos a un posible contagio de un virus como el Covid-19, resultado que todos quieren evitar.
 
Si bien esta tecnología comenzó su historia a inicios del siglo XX, su uso ha sido incrementado con el aumento de pruebas e investigación a nivel mundial para ver su aplicabilidad. En Chile, la empresa local TOC Biometrics –líder en biometría y con oficinas en Inglaterra, México, Argentina y Perú- ya está desarrollando el reconocimiento del iris en su Centro I+D SR-226, recientemente certificado por CORFO y encabezado por el director de investigación de la compañía y Ph.D especialista en biometría, Juan Tapia, quien adelantó que ya cuentan con resultados preliminares favorables.
 
“Actualmente estamos desarrollando tecnologías nuevas relacionadas al iris y nuestra idea es diseñar los primeros sistemas de identificación o de verificación en esta línea. Una vez que estas herramientas estén listas, hay que buscar la aplicabilidad. Ya nos encontramos trabajando en dos líneas de manera paralela: verificación de identidad mediante selfies y actitud laboral”, comenta Tapia.
 
Formas de uso y beneficios
En el Centro I+D de TOC Biometrics se está trabajando para conseguir dos herramientas basadas en el reconocimiento del iris:
 
1. Diseñar un sistema de identificación y/o verificación usando la información periocular del ojo, mediante las imágenes capturadas por la cámara de un dispositivo movil, que en un futuro cercano ayudará a realizar compras bancarias, retail, salud, entre otros. TOC Biometrics busca sumar esta herramienta a su catálogo de productos de identificación y verificación.
 
 
2. Mediante la utilización de sensores infrarrojos, se esta desarrollando el proyecto FONDEF Idea ID19I10118 en conjunto con la Universidad de Chile – DIMEC, el cual buscar determinar la actitud laboral de las personas. Así, se espera predecir quién esté bajo los efectos del alcohol, drogas o fatiga laboral, lo cual disminuye el estado de alerta de los trabajores, indicando si se encuentra apto o no para iniciar su jornada laboral. De esta manera, se podrá controlar en el ingreso al turno profesional de acuerdo con las exigencias del Código del Trabajo, entre otras medidas. La minería, transporte y salud serán los principales rubros que podrán verse beneficiados con esta tecnología y reducir sus accidentes laborales, cuidar a los trabajadores, además de lograr ser más eficientes en sus operaciones.
 
 
Los productos que están siendo desarrollados por la empresa chilena de biometría, cuentan con beneficios importantes para las cadenas logísticas, lo que ha aumentado debido a la contingencia que se está viviendo a nivel global a partir del virus del Covid-19.
 
Es decir, “el coronavirus vino a acelerar y cambiar todo. Los productos basados en sensores de huella con contacto ya no ofrecen la misma garantía de uso. Con esto, los sistemas tendrán que evolucionar para evitar contagios por contacto debido a múltiples usuarios. 
 
Por lo que hoy el uso del iris se ve potenciado y, aunque la tecnología se encuentra en desarrollo, la biometría de iris está mucho más madura”, aclara Juan Tapia, director de desarrollo de TOC Biometrics.
 
El también académico del Departamento de Informática de la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, agrega que “a medida que se vayan creando tecnologías basadas en el iris, se crearán nuevas aplicaciones. Por otro lado, se irán reemplazando o combinando las ya existentes. Por ejemplo, creo que el uso de la huella con un sensor tradicional deberá migrar al uso de sensores sin contacto para seguir en el mercado”.
 
La biometría ha sido un gran aliado de las personas, principalmente por su constante búsqueda de evitar la vulneración de datos. Además, la biometria de iris se potencia como un sistema dificil de ser adulterado dada la complejidad que es manipular el iris, el cual es controlado por el sistema nervioso central.
 
“Nuestra misión es explorar las posibilidades que vienen en el futuro y, dentro de las opciones biométricas, el iris es la que destaca con más fuerza dentro de todas las que están disponibles. Con el uso de la mascarilla, ahora se potencia aún más la aplicación del reconocimiento del iris, ya que solo se necesitan los ojos, que es lo que queda descubierto”, concluye Tapia.
